Producer, pianist en zanger James Luther ‘Jim’ Dickinson is op zaterdag 15 augustus overleden in het Methodist Extended Care Hospital in Memphis waar hij een gecompliceerde hartoperatie onderging.

Jim Dickinson bracht in zijn lange muziekcarrière acht soloplaten uit, maar zijn grootste bekendheid ontleende hij aan zijn werk voor andere muzikanten. Zo speelde hij mee op Aretha Franklin’s album ‘Spirit In The Dark’ uit 1970, het geweldige ‘Sticky Fingers’ van The Rolling Stones en de al even memorabele LP’s ‘Into The Purple Valley’ en ‘Boomer’s Story’ van Ry Cooder.

Vanaf de jaren zeventig zat Dickens als (co)producer achter de knoppen bij opnamen van onder andere  Big Star, Alex Chilton, Willy DeVille, Green On Red, Jason & The Scorchers, The Replacements en Mudhone.

Dickinson was wat men in de VS ‘humble’ noemt. ‘What I do as a piano player is really simple and rudimentary,’ zei hij in 2007 in een interview op de website van Gibson. ‘For that reason I can pretty much play with anyone, regardless of genre. I’m not a jazz player, for instance, but I’ve got a little jazz trick that I do. And the same is true of country music. I’m not really a country player, but I’ve got some country tricks. In session playing, the piano – certainly in rock music if not most pop music – should be colorless. You should be able to detect it only when you take it out, when it’s missing.’

Jim Dickinson werd 67 jaar.
